Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër is a remarkably preserved Ottoman-era stone town in southern Albania, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its rare architectural value. Famously nicknamed the "City of Stone," its unique skyline is defined by imposing, fortress-like Balkan stone houses (kulle) built into the steep slopes of the Drino Valley, featuring distinctive slate-tiled roofs and whitewashed walls. The town is dominated by the colossal Gjirokastër Fortress, a hilltop citadel housing military ruins and expansive valley views, which looks down onto the beautifully restored Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër) with its steep, intricate cobblestone streets. As the birthplace of both the notorious communist dictator Enver Hoxha and the internationally acclaimed author Ismail Kadare, Gjirokastër seamlessly pairs a deep, multi-layered history with a rich literary culture and authentic, slow-paced southern hospitality.
