The 5-Day Across Albania Journey: Northern Peaks to Southern Shores

Your tour guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel in Tirana (or at the airport) to begin your journey toward the historic town of Krujë. The tour starts with a walk through the vibrant Krujë Bazaar, one of Albania’s oldest traditional marketplaces, dating back over half a millennium. Built in a classic Ottoman style, the bazaar connects the town center to the castle gates via a charming, stone-paved street lined with wooden shops offering handmade artisan crafts, antiquities, and local souvenirs.

From the bazaar, you will step inside the walls of Krujë Castle, Skanderbeg’s legendary stronghold and a resilient symbol of over 1,500 years of Albanian history. A guided walk inside the sprawling fortress grounds reveals crucial heritage sites, including Skanderbeg’s historic tree, the castle’s ancient hidden escape passage, former residential quarters, the ruins of the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet, and the iconic watchtower, which offers the highest viewpoints over the valley. Following the castle tour, we continue driving up Krujë Mountain to reach the Sari Salltik Cave. Perched high on the rock face, this sacred site is a highly revered place of worship for the Bektashi community and provides staggering panoramic views that stretch across Tirana, Krujë, Durrës, and out to the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.

In the afternoon, we head north toward Shkodër, one of the oldest and most culturally rich urban hubs in the Balkans. Your first stop is the magnificent Rozafa Castle, where more than two millennia of Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman history are preserved within imposing stone walls. Enjoy a guided walk through the three main courtyards and the castle museum while absorbing breathtaking views of the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers. Afterward, we head down into the city center to relax with a coffee, local beer, or traditional dinner along Shkodër’s beautifully restored pedestrian boulevard.

The Alpine Gateway: Shkodër to the Heart of Theth

Our day begins in Shkodër as we journey straight into the wild, majestic landscapes of the far North. Leaving the lowlands behind, the road winds past the shores of Lake Shkodra and rushing rivers before climbing aggressively into the towering limestone peaks of the Accursed Mountains (Albanian Alps).

The Lavender High-Pass

As the vehicle ascends toward the mountain saddle of Qafa e Thores (1,700 meters above sea level), the air turns crisp and alpine. This high pass serves as the natural balcony of the Alps; if you are traveling during May or June, the roadsides are blanketed with beautiful fields of blooming purple lavender that fill the mountain air with a distinct aroma. We will pause at the top of the pass for a panoramic photo session, where the sweeping valleys and jagged tooth-like peaks stretch out endlessly in every direction.

The Living History of Theth

Descending onto the valley floor, we enter the isolated realm of Theth Village, where time seems to have slowed to a crawl. We explore the soul of the village on foot, visiting the picturesque Stone Church of Theth and the legendary Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit). This ancient defensive stone structure stands as a powerful monument to the highlander culture, ancient customary laws (Kanun), and the historic system of mountain blood feuds. Following our exploration of the historic village landmarks, a scenic trail leads us toward the spectacular 30-meter drop of the Grunas Waterfall and the vibrant, glacier-fed pool of the Blue Eye of Theth, hidden deep within the forested valley. After soaking in the peaceful mountain ambiance, we return via the high mountain road back to Shkodër for a comfortable night’s rest.

The City of a Thousand Windows & Local Vineyards

We depart from the north and drive south towards the rolling hills and agricultural heartlands of central-southern Albania to discover one of its oldest historic treasures.

A Lakeside Pause

To break up the drive, we will stop for a relaxing morning coffee break in the charming town of Belsh. Nestled within the rolling Dumrea plateau, this area is famous for its unique karst topography, boasting a staggering cluster of 84 small natural lakes. It provides the perfect, quiet setting to stretch your legs by the water’s edge before we push onward to the “City of a Thousand Windows.”

The Living Castle of Berat

Upon arriving in Berat, we climb the steep cobblestone hill to explore its massive, ancient fortress. This is a rare, globally recognized “living castle” where local families still reside inside the medieval stone fortifications. As we wander through its narrow labyrinth of stone alleys, your guide will unlock the deep Byzantine and Ottoman history of this spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site. Following an authentic lunch inside the castle walls, we descend to the valley floor to explore the architectural masterpieces of the Mangalemi and Gorica districts. We will walk past the historic Sultan’s Mosque and the grand old Pasha’s residences before crossing the iconic stone arches of the Gorica Bridge, capturing the famous views of the thousands of stacked Ottoman windows tiers climbing up the cliffs.

The Wine Experience

After checking into your hotel and taking some time to refresh, we drive out to the nearby rural village of Peshtan. Here, you will visit a boutique, family-run winery for an exclusive tour of the vineyards and cellars. You will sample premium local Albanian grape varieties—such as the red Kallmet or the deep Shesh i Zi—carefully paired with artisanal traditional snacks, cheeses, and olive oils, marking the perfect culinary conclusion to an immersive day of heritage.

From the Stone City to the Ionian Coast

Today, our journey carries us further south from the dramatic, silver-limestone streets of the UNESCO fortress city of Gjirokastër down to the sun-drenched beaches of the Ionian Sea.

The Heart of Gjirokastër

We begin our morning exploring the cobblestone streets of the Old Bazaar. This is the cultural heart of Gjirokastër, where you can watch local artisans carving wood and stone or embroidering traditional costumes in shops that have operated for generations. From the bazaar, we ascend the steep ridge to enter Gjirokastër Castle, one of the largest defensive fortifications in the Balkans. Your guide will lead you through its vast vaulted galleries, past captured military weaponry, through the eerie historic prisons, and out onto the open ramparts to stand beneath the iconic Clock Tower, overlooking the sweeping Drino Valley. Next, we visit Zekate House, a masterfully preserved 1812 Ottoman tower house. Featuring grand twin towers, intricate wooden ceilings, and lavish reception rooms, it gives you a glimpse into the luxurious lives of wealthy Ottoman-era pashas.

Nature’s Masterpiece & Sunset Views

Leaving the stone city, we cut through the mountains toward the coast, stopping deep inside a lush national park to see the southern Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër). This stunning natural phenomenon is a remarkably deep underwater spring that pumps crystal-clear water under high pressure, creating a glowing sapphire-blue pool that looks like a human iris. After a refreshing stroll along the riverbanks, we finish our driving leg at Sarandë, the bustling capital of the Albanian Riviera. We will climb up to the hilltop ruins of Lëkursi Castle just in time to watch the sun sink below the horizon, painting the entire bay of Sarandë, the plain of Butrint, and the nearby Greek island of Corfu in gold.

Ksamil, Butrint & The Spectacular Coastal Road

Our final day combines pristine tropical-style beaches, dense ancient Mediterranean history, and one of the most scenic coastal driving routes in southern Europe.

The Islands of Ksamil

We kick off the morning in the coastal village of Ksamil, widely celebrated as the jewel of the Albanian Riviera. You will have free time to walk across the fine white sands, swim in the clear turquoise waters, or look out across the three green islands that sit just a short distance offshore. It offers a spectacular beach setting before we transition from coastal relaxation to ancient history.

Ancient Butrint

Next, a short drive brings us to Butrint Archaeological Park, a massive UNESCO World Heritage site situated on a dense, forested peninsula between a lagoon and the sea. Walking under the shade of ancient eucalyptus and bay trees, you will explore thousands of years of layered civilizations. Your guided walk takes you past the remarkably preserved 3rd-century BC Greek stone theater, monumental Roman public baths, a grand early Christian baptistery featuring intricate floor mosaics, and massive Venetian defensive walls.

The Riviera Scenic Drive

For the return journey north to Tirana, our driver navigates the famous Albanian Riviera coastal highway. This engineering marvel clings to the edge of the mountain range as the cliffs drop dramatically straight into the deep blue Ionian Sea. Along the way, we will make a series of panoramic photo stops:

• Porto Palermo: Home to a historic, triangular stone castle built on a small peninsula jutting into a protected naval bay.

• Qeparo & Borsh: Charming stone villages flanked by endless olive groves and long, sweeping pebble beaches.
