Day 1: Tirana → Komani Lake → Valbona

The Journey North & Hidden Valleys

Our adventure starts early with a 05:00 AM departure from Tirana, heading directly toward the rugged northern highlands. This day is dedicated to witnessing the dramatic shift in scenery as the urban landscapes fade away into wild, remote mountain ranges.

The Lake Koman Crossing

At 09:00 AM, we board the local ferry to cross Komani Lake. Formed in 1985, this legendary water route remains the only structural lifeline for many local families trying to reach the outside world. The boat ride offers spectacular, cinematic views of sheer limestone canyons and emerald-green waters, making it widely known as one of the most beautiful boat journeys in the entire Balkan region.

Arrival in Valbona & Kukaj Hike

Once the ferry reaches the docks at Fierza, we take a 45-minute drive winding through Bajram Curri to reach the absolute heart of Valbona Valley. Following a traditional local lunch, we will head out for a 4-hour trek to the quiet, remote mountain hamlet of Kukaj. This peaceful area provides an authentic look at traditional highlander life, where families still live inside historic stone structures. The day ends with a hearty traditional dinner and an overnight stay in a cozy mountain guesthouse.

Day 2: Valbona → Theth

The Grand Crossing: Valbona to Theth

Today is the undisputed “Big Day” of the itinerary—the most famous single trek in the entire chain of the Albanian Alps. We will lace up our boots to follow the historic mountain trail that, for generations, served as the only physical connection between these two isolated northern valleys.

A Walk Through History

Setting off from the valley floor, our path cuts through the oldest, most historic sections of Valbona. Along the trail, you will pass incredible stone houses over a century old, where local alpine families still reside to this day. The 18 km trail climbs steadily, taking you through a striking combination of deep green valleys, pine forests, and dramatic rocky scree as we push toward the mountain summit. Near the top, we will take a well-deserved break for a picnic lunch at a small, rustic mountain café along the path to recharge our energy.

Descending into Theth

After roughly 7 to 8 hours of active hiking, the trail opens up to reveal a stunning descent into the magical, isolated village of Theth. Famed for its unmatched alpine backdrops, we will explore the village floor and view the iconic Lock-In Tower, a defensive stone structure steeped in the complex history of northern blood feuds and highlander laws. We wrap up this epic day of trekking with a traditional, home-cooked mountain dinner and a restful night at a local village guesthouse.

Day 3: Theth → Shkoder → Tirana

The Waters of Theth & The Return South

On our final morning in the mountains, we spend our time discovering the rich natural wonders tucked away inside the valley floor before starting our journey back to the capital.

The Grunas Waterfall

Following a fresh mountain breakfast, we embark on a pleasant 45-minute stroll from the village center out to the spectacular Grunas Waterfall. The easy trail winds through soft, rolling green hills and traditional neighborhoods, giving you one final glimpse into the slow rhythm of local village life. The waterfall itself is a magnificent natural monument, featuring a 30-meter drop of white water plunging over a mossy rock face into a clear, rushing pool.

The Blue Eye of Theth

Next, we head deeper into the valley to visit its most famous natural landmark: the Blue Eye of Theth. Hidden about 10 km from the village center, this deep natural pool is completely filled with brilliant, crystal-clear emerald-blue water. Fed by heavy glacial runoff from the surrounding peaks, the pool stays at a constant, bone-chilling 5°C year-round—making it a perfect spot for a scenic alpine photograph or a very brave, quick mountain dip.

From the Peaks to the City

In the afternoon, we say goodbye to the Alps and begin our 3-hour drive down to Shkodër, the cultural capital of Northern Albania. You will have free time to stretch your legs, explore the colorful pedestrian streets, or grab a coffee in the historic city center. Afterward, we complete our final driving leg back to Tirana (or Durrës), arriving in the evening to conclude your unforgettable alpine circuit.
