The 4-Day Across Albania Journey: Northern Peaks to Southern Shores

Your tour guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel in Tirana (or at the airport) to kick off the journey toward Krujë. We start with a walk through the historic Krujë Bazaar, one of Albania’s oldest traditional marketplaces. Built in a classic Ottoman style, the bazaar connects the town center with the castle through a charming stone-paved street lined with small wooden shops offering handmade crafts, unique antiquities, and local souvenirs.

Following the bazaar path, you will step inside Krujë Castle, Skanderbeg’s legendary stronghold and a resilient monument to 1,500 years of Albanian history. A guided walk inside the fortress grounds reveals critical historical corners, including Skanderbeg’s tree, the castle’s hidden escape passage, ancient residential ruins, the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet, and the towering watchtower, which provides incredible viewpoints over the entire valley. Next, we drive further up Krujë Mountain to reach the Sari Salltik Cave. This sacred cliffside shrine is a highly revered place of worship for the Bektashi community and offers breathtaking panoramic views stretching past Tirana and Durrës all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

In the afternoon, we continue north to Shkodër, one of the oldest and most cultural cities in the country. Our first stop is Rozafa Castle, where over 2,000 years of Illyrian, Venetian, and Ottoman history are preserved within massive stone ramparts. Enjoy a guided walk through the citadel and its museum while taking in stunning views of the surrounding lake and converging rivers. We wrap up the day in the city center, where you can relax with a coffee or beer along Shkodër’s well-known pedestrian promenade.

Morning: Shkodër to the Capital

Our day begins with breakfast in Shkodër, the historic gateway to the North. After fueling up, we set off on a scenic drive south toward Tirana, the energetic, colorful heart of Albania.

Midday: Landmarks & Local Life

Upon arrival, we dive straight into the capital’s unique architecture and bustling urban atmosphere. We start at Skanderbeg Square, the monumental center of the country, surrounded by grand national buildings and striking public art. Next, we experience the local rhythm at the New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri), a lively market famous for its fresh produce, spices, and authentic neighborhood energy. For lunch, we step inside the centuries-old fortress walls of Tirana Castle for an exceptional culinary highlight. We will dine at a top-tier restaurant celebrated for its traditional Albanian menu, giving you a true taste of local gastronomy paired with a flight of our famous traditional spirit, Rakija.

Afternoon: Icons & Adventure

After a satisfying lunch, we continue exploring Tirana’s bold modern transformation. We walk over to the Pyramid of Tirana, an iconic late-communist monument newly transformed into a climbable, colorful tech center that offers an amazing 360-degree view of the city skyline. We will also pass by the unique Air Albania Stadium, a masterpiece of modern sports architecture seamlessly woven into the city center. The late afternoon is completely yours to rest, shop, or dive into the nightlife of the trendy Blloku neighborhood.

Morning: Departure & The City of a Thousand Windows

We kick off the day with breakfast at our hotel in Tirana and head straight out onto the highway. Our first major destination is the UNESCO-protected architectural gem of Berat. We ascend the steep ridge to enter the massive walls of Berat Castle, a fascinating 13th-century fortress where locals still reside today among Byzantine churches and ancient stone ruins. The views from the battlements looking out over the Osum River valley are legendary. Afterward, we descend into the historic heart of the old town to wander the narrow alleys of the Mangalemi district, capturing photos of the striking white Ottoman-era facades that earned Berat its famous nickname.

Afternoon: The Stone City of Gjirokastër

Leaving Berat, our road trip carries us further south into the rugged interior to reach Gjirokastër, beautifully called the “Stone City.” We head directly up to Gjirokastër Castle, a massive hilltop fortress that sits like a stone ship overlooking the entire valley. Your guide will show you its landmark clock tower and deep collection of military history weaponry. From there, we walk down through the 17th-century Qafa e Pazarit (the Old Bazaar), admiring the unique architecture defined by slate-covered roofs and watching local craftsmen practice traditional wood and silver artistry along the checkered stone lanes.

Late Afternoon: The Barrels Vineyard

We wrap up this epic day of heritage at The Barrels (Te Fuçitë), a hidden boutique vineyard tucked into the surrounding countryside. You will relax right among the grapevines with a multi-course traditional meal made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. To top off the evening, we will sample their signature estate wines and artisanal Rakija, providing a peaceful, rustic end to a day of deep exploration.

The Blue Eye Natural Spring (Syri i Kaltër)

After leaving the historic charm of Gjirokastër, we drive toward one of Albania’s most stunning natural phenomena: the southern Blue Eye. This is a crystal-clear freshwater spring hidden inside a lush national forest, where vibrant sapphire-blue and emerald water bubbles up under high pressure from a mysterious underwater cave more than 50 meters deep. To reach the spring comfortably and beat the midday heat, we will board the local motorized road train at the park entrance, which drops us off directly at the spring site. You can admire the glowing pool from the viewing platform or simply relax by the rushing river with a cold coffee.

Coastal Calm in Sarandë

Next, a short drive brings us to the nearby seaside city of Sarandë, the bustling hub of the southern Albanian Riviera. You will have free time to enjoy a leisurely walk along the palm-lined seafront promenade, breathe in the fresh Mediterranean air, and look directly across the sparkling water at the outline of the nearby Greek island of Corfu. If you prefer, use this beach break to take a quick dip in the sea or capture beautiful panoramic photos of the crescent bay.

The Scenic Journey to Tirana

As the afternoon winds down, we board our private transport to begin our scenic return drive back to Tirana. Leaving the coast behind, we travel through the heart of the southern countryside, passing rolling green hills, traditional farming villages, and quiet river valleys. We return safely to the capital by the evening, concluding an incredible 4-day loop across Albania’s grandest castles, historic cities, and dramatic natural wonders.
