Historic Heights & The Gateway to the Coast

Your journey begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Tirana or directly from the airport. We head first to the historic mountain town of Krujë, famously known as the fortress heart of Albanian medieval resistance. We begin our exploration with a stroll down the stone-paved corridors of the Krujë Old Bazaar. This 500-year-old Ottoman-style market features rows of antique wooden shops overflowing with handmade textiles, copper crafts, and traditional souvenirs.

The bazaar road leads us directly into the massive stone gates of Krujë Castle. Inside this 1,500-year-old fortress, your guide will unravel centuries of history while showing you Skanderbeg’s legendary tree, hidden defensive mountain passages, and the historic foundations of the Sultan Mehmet Mosque. We finish our castle walk on the open-air ramparts of the watchtower—the highest point of the fortress—for an unobstructed view across the vast valley below. From the castle, we drive further up the craggy mountain switchbacks to reach the Sari Salltik Cave. Perched dramatically on a sheer cliffside, this sacred Bektashi shrine offers a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere along with a staggering panoramic view stretching past the coastal city of Durrës and out to the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Leaving the rugged northern mountains behind, we chart a course south toward the coast. Along the way, we make a specialized culinary stop in Lushnje to taste Albania’s most celebrated Byrek. We will visit a renowned local bakery to sample this flaky, savory traditional pastry, widely considered the finest in the country. Our day concludes in Vlorë, a beautiful coastal city where the Adriatic and Ionian seas officially meet. Take in your first views of the dramatic southwestern coastline along the vibrant, palm-lined Lungomare boulevard before checking into your hotel for a relaxing overnight stay by the sea.

The Riviera Heights & The Ancient City of Butrint

Following breakfast at your hotel, we set off from Vlorë toward the far southern tip of the country, traveling along a coastal highway widely ranked among the most spectacular scenic driving routes in Europe.

Our journey begins with a dramatic, winding climb into the pine forests of Llogara National Park, reaching the summit at the Llogara Pass (1,000 meters above sea level). Standing at this magnificent “balcony of the sea,” you will be treated to breathtaking views where massive mountain cliffs drop vertically straight into the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. From this high pass, we wind our way down along the Albanian Riviera, driving through isolated coastal stone villages, past hidden olive groves, and alongside an endless blue maritime horizon.

Our main destination for the day is Butrint National Park, a world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exploring Butrint is a true journey through time; the archaeological park preserves complex, distinct layers left behind by ancient Greek colonists, Roman imperial builders, and Byzantine administrators. Under the shade of a lush Mediterranean forest, your guide will lead you through a remarkably well-preserved 3rd-century BC stone theater, a grand 6th-century Christian basilica, monumental public Roman baths, and towering ancient city fortification walls. After thoroughly exploring these ancient ruins, a short drive brings us to Sarandë, the vibrant hub of the southern coast, where you have a free evening to enjoy the sea breeze, dine on fresh seafood, and absorb the energetic seaside atmosphere.

Stone Cities & Thousand Windows

After breakfast, we turn inland from the coast, passing through deep mountain valleys to bridge two of the most architecturally beautiful and historic cities in the Balkan peninsula.

Our first stop is the UNESCO-listed “Stone City” of Gjirokastër. We dive immediately into the historic heart of the town with a walking tour through the Old Bazaar, where you can marvel at the distinct Ottoman architecture defined by steep cobblestone alleys and unique, silver-slate rooftops. From the marketplace, we climb the stone paths to enter the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, one of the largest fortresses in the region. We will explore the sweeping castle grounds, stand beneath its iconic stone clock tower, and learn about the city’s defensive history. Before bidding farewell to the south, we pull into a boutique agrotourism estate nestled in the countryside. Here, you will enjoy a fresh, multi-course farm-to-table lunch crafted with organic local ingredients and paired with regional wines.

In the afternoon, our journey continues north to Berat, globally celebrated as the “City of 1001 Windows.” Upon arrival, we head straight into the historic Mangalemi district, the most iconic quarter of the old city. Here, you will see rows of white, grand Ottoman-era houses seamlessly stacked along the steep hillside. You will have plenty of time to explore the old stone-paved streets, cross the historic bridges, and take in the magical atmosphere of the ancient town as the windowed facades light up after dark. Spend a peaceful night in the heart of historic Berat.

Living Castles & Ancient Coasts

After a fresh breakfast, we begin a diverse journey that seamlessly connects the interior mountains to the ancient Roman shores of the Adriatic coastline.

We kick off the morning within the massive stone fortifications of Berat Castle. Perched high above the Osum River, this citadel is one of the rare archaeological sites in the world where an ancient fortress remains a vibrant, living community. You will have the exclusive opportunity to step away from the standard tourist paths and sit down for a morning coffee directly with local residents who still inhabit the castle walls, hearing firsthand accounts of families who have kept this fortress alive for generations. After touring the hidden Byzantine churches, old mosques, and panoramic valley viewpoints within the citadel, we descend the hill and head toward the sea.

By midday, we arrive in the ancient port city of Durrës. We step back two millennia at the Roman Amphitheater, a massive 2nd-century engineering marvel that stands as the largest Roman amphitheater in the entire Balkan region. From there, we visit the iconic Venetian Tower, a robust circular bastion that serves as a visual symbol of the city’s medieval maritime strength. We will wrap up our coastal visit with a leisurely walk along the vibrant Vollga Promenade, enjoying the refreshing Adriatic breeze and local street life. Leaving the coast behind, we make our final short drive into Tirana, arriving in the evening to settle into the energetic capital city for the night.

Capital Culture & Traditional Flavors

Today is dedicated to exploring the colorful, energetic heart of Tirana, a city where deep Balkan traditions collide with bold, modern transformations.

Our immersion begins at the New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri), a beautifully renovated open-air market located in one of Tirana’s oldest historic neighborhoods. Alongside your guide, you will dive straight into Albanian food culture—sampling fresh seasonal fruits, regional cheeses, olives, and traditional street food. We round out our market tour with a formal tasting of authentic Albanian Raki, the robust grape spirit that stands as the ultimate symbol of local hospitality. From the market, we take a short walk to Tirana Castle (the Fortress of Justinian), where centuries-old Byzantine stone walls now frame a bustling pedestrian street filled with artisan boutiques and modern coffee shops.

Next, we emerge into Skanderbeg Square, the grand central plaza of the capital. Here, you will view the towering bronze equestrian monument of Albania’s national hero, flanked by a fascinating mix of Ottoman, Italian-fascist, communist, and ultra-modern skyscrapers. We continue down the boulevard to the Pyramid of Tirana, an iconic late-communist monument that has been creatively reimagined into a vibrant, multi-colored tech and cultural center with open staircases leading to great urban views of the city skyline. In the afternoon, you can choose to plunge into the underground history at the Bunk’Art 2 nuclear bunker museum, or cruise on an E-bike tour out to the quiet lakeside forests of Tirana Lake Park, marking a dynamic conclusion to your grand 5-day Albanian exploration.
